Boon lay is a small housing estate situated in the western region of Singapore; it is in between Jurong West and newer Jurong West Extension, it comes under Jurong West Planning Area maintained by Urban redevelopment Authority. Boon lay is bordered by Upper Jurong road in the north, Selat Jurong in the south, Port Road and International road in the east and by Traus road in the west.
Boon Lay is named after Chew Boon Lay, was a prominent business man in the 19th century, his rubber estate was located here. About 1.012 sq km area from his estate was requisite by the war department and by their on the growth of Boon Lay village took place. In 1960 the Boon Lay village had very small number of peoples living here and it was around 420 peoples. In early years i.e. around 1960s major Part of Boon Lay was covered with dense forest and the introduction of large-scale industrialization in Singapore brought drastic changes in Boon lay. Singapore’s first Iron and Steel mills were established here way back in 1962.
Boon lay is the home for many large scale industries of Singapore and the government here is planning to redevelop the old industries to mould them into modern high-density factories. World’s largest chocolate factory the Barry Callebaut is located here in Boon Lay.
