Bukit Batok is new town located in western Singapore and has the boundaries within the Bukit Batok planning area and is bounded by Chua Chu Kang Road in the north, the Pan Island Expressway in the south, Upper Bukit Timah Road and Old Jurong Road in the east and Bukit Batok Road in the west. There are many philosophies behind the name Bukit Batok and one of them is that ‘Bukit’ means hill and ‘Batok’ means cough, this meaning was derived during the stone quarrying, the blasting of stone sounded as if the hills were coughing.
The total area of Bukit Batok Newtown is 8.02 sq km out of which residential area is 2.91 sq km of Bukit Batok has 31,000 units of HDB flats and majority of them are 3- roomed or 4- roomed flats and has the population of 120,000 residents. Around 1950 Bukit Batok was a rural and back drafted area, and it, mainly consisted of forests and farm lands. However, the major development of Bukit Batok into satellite town of Singapore was started in 1970 and by 1980 it had clusters of HDB flats built in the area. Industries in the area are Hume industry and the famous Ford Motor Works Factory which is popularly known as the venue of British surrender to Japanese during World War 2.
Bukit Batok Newtown has a perfect blend of entertainment and shopping facilities; it also very beautiful parks and gardens, Bukit Batok is also known as garden city of Singapore. Bukit Batok is famous for its shopping complex popularly known as West Mall which was opened in mid 1998; it is an 8 storey building with a floor area of 283,000 sq ft and was built at the cost of S$170 million. West mall is equipped with many amenities like Egh Wah Cineplex which has 6- halls in it, post office, book stores, community library, super markets etc.
Bukit Batok is divided into eight sub zones and they are Gombak, Brickworks, Guilin, Bukit Batok east, Bukit Batok central, Bukit Batok south, Hill view and Hong Kha. There are several educational institutions in Bukit Batok Newtown area which include Elizabeth Primary School, Dazhong Primary School, Bukit Batok Secondary Scholl and Bukit Batok ITE and there is also swimming complex near Bukit Batok MRT station.
Bukit Batok MRT is an aboveground railway station and is situated next to the West mall, there is also bus interchanges which use SMRT buses and are of moderate size, other than SMRT buses there are also feeder service , trunk service etc for transport of public.
