Geylang is one of the oldest towns in Singapore; it is known for its architectural features and has a reputation of being Malay Emporium of Singapore. Around 1840s Orang Laut a breed of sea nomads used to live in the side of Geylang River since than the area of Geylang came into existence. It is also known as cultural heart of Singapore.
Geylang is the word derived from Malay word ‘kilang’ which means ‘press’, ‘factory’ or ‘mill’. Geylang is also known as Geylang Seria and it is neighborhood of the central area of city-state Singapore. It is located in the east of Singapore River.
The Geylang housing estate is developed by Housing Development Board in 1965 the Geylang Serial Housing Scheme under the redevelopment program built three housing flats further the redevelopment program was completed by the HDB flats which include the development of industrial estate and shopping complexes. So as to preserve the Malay culture government of Singapore has allocated 1 hectare land to in which Malay village had been brought up this is a replica of Malay Kampong it is also used to promote the Malay handicraft and cultural activities.
The cultural museum of Geylang displays vast collections of articraft tools like weaving tolls, musical instruments and has the display of traditional Malay wedding dress which is completely hand weave dress, accessories and bridal chamber. The lives of Malay in Singapore are highlighted by the Geylang Seria, the Muslim Showcase and the Hall of Fame.
Geylang is a hectic town in day and night it is well known for its 24 hours working coffee houses, Geylang is prominently known as the red light district of Singapore, this area provides legal sex service for all Singapore. It is spread in a area of about 10 sq km.
The estimated population of Geylang is nearly about 150,000 residents and has more than 31,600 units of HDB, flats out of which mare than 6,000 flats are available for rental purpose and mostly of them are 3 and 4 roomed flats. The Geylang road and the Changi road are used for residential purpose mainly. Geylang is believed to be medium sized residential area.
Geylang is served by Paya Lebar MRT, Kallang MRT and the Aljunied MRT and the bus services running trough Geylang are Trunk Service, SSB Transit, SRMT and the Night Service.
Geylang is subdivided into five sub zones and they are as follow:
• Kallang Way
• Geylang East
• Kampong Ubi
• Aljunied
• MacPherson.
Geylang is famous for its restaurants and the sea food available here is of very low cost and the accommodations in Geylang are very cheap.
