Punggol Newtown is a latest new town developed by HDB in Punggol and is situated in the North-East region of Singapore. Punggol Newtown is spread in the area of 9.75 sq km and the area used for residential purpose is 4.74 sq km. according to the census of 2006 the estimated population of Punggol is about 51,700. Punggol is popular for its sea food restaurants and hotels.
Punggol is a Malay term and it means ‘throwing sticks at the tree branches to loosen the fruits from its stems’ and it also refers to the place where the fruits are sold in wholesale. Punggol is one of the oldest territories of Singapore and is believed that it was in existence in Singapore even before Sir Stamford Raffle founded Singapore. There used to exist poultry and vegetable farms in Punggol at first but know they are replaced by tall buildings and apartments.
There had been two plans implemented by Singapore government to develop Punggol into Punggol Newtown and they are Punggol 21 and Punggol 21 Plus. Brief descriptions about both these plans are as follow.
Punggol 21: Punggol 21 plan was announced by Singaporean government in 1996 so as to develop Punggol with new model of housing for new town in 21st century. It had mix of executive condominiums, private houses and with high grade HDB flats grouped into smaller estates designed distinctly.
Each estate had 1200 to 1800 units with necessary greenery maintained and each estate was so located that they were 300 meters away from nearest LRT station. The Punggol 21 plan wasn’t completed because it was affected by Asian economic crisis in 1997 so only 16,000 flats out of 80,000 units were constructed by 2007. The only shopping mall in the estate is Punggol plaza and the estate is not facilitated with any type of recreation facilities like Cineplex and swimming pools.
Punggol 21 Plus: In 2007 again the Singaporean government had announced a plan called Punggol 21 Plus to re-vitalize the town. Under the new plan, Suengi Punggol and Suengi Serangoon which are situate by the side of the town will be dammed to create an fresh water lake and would serve as a reservoir. the project work of the reservoir would start in 2009 and would be completed in 2013 and once completed there would be recreation facilities like swimming pools, gardens etc.
The plan Punggol 21 Plus has 18,000 new HDB flats and 3000 new flats will be built every year in Punggol Newtown.
Through Punggol MRT and LRT satiation one can easily access trough different parts in of Singapore easily.
