Sembwang is the area situated in the Northern-most portion of Singapore, it is locate on the coast of the Johor strait and it faces Malaysia. Sembwang is very quiet and less active town as it is out of the way of most of the Singaporeans.
The name of Sembwang is named after the Sembwang tree which is found mostly in this area; this area was first included in the map of Singapore in 1830 and was founded by Franklin & Johnson. This area was first known for its rubber plantations but later this was converted into naval base of British Army. After independence the naval base was undertaken by Sembwang Corporation and named it as SembCorp which know deals with ship business. Till now Sembwang has a rich British colonial influence most of it roads are named as like Flankland, Kings Avenue, Montreal etc. At present Sembwang Newtown is major port of Singapore handling large commodities and cargos.
The total area of Sembwang is about 7.08 sq km and about 3.76 sq km of its area is used for residential purpose, it has flats under Housing Development Board (HDB), condominiums, black-and-white colonial blocks etc. The old houses in this Sembwang are condemned and are not used for residential purpose now. Being the port area most of the residents living here are expatriates. The flat of HDB in Sembwang has been split into three divisions and each of them is represented by the Member of Parliament. The North West Council is the local administration which looks after planning, community programs, maintenance of gardens and parking areas etc. number of housing units of HDB at present are about 17,874 units and the projected number to be completed in future is 64,000 and the total population of Sembwang 58,700 peoples.
Some of the attractions of Sembwang are Bottle Tree Village, Sembwang Park and Sembwang Camp.
Bottle Tree Village is located near Jalan Mem Purong and is famous for bottle trees which were imported from Queensland Australia, Sembwang eating village is in the park which is famous for its Chinese food.
Sembwang Park is spread in an area of 15 ha land is a tranquil park which was built in 1970 and is developed by National Park Board is situated in the Northern Tip of Sembwang road, it is one of the few parks of Singapore which has natural beach in it.
Sembwang Camp is only open for military personal. Sembwang is served by Sembwang MRT station which acts as central hub for the residents of Sembwang which has commercial outlets and recreational facilities in it. Bus service which circulates through Sembwang is Trunk Service, SSB Transits, SMRT and Night Service.
