Sengkang Newtown is a relatively young satellite town in the city sate of Singapore, originally it was fishing village it is presently being developed by the Hosing Development Board into a 21st century township. The town has four large neighborhoods, it is located within Sengkang. It is one of the 55 planning areas outlined for long term planning purpose by Urban Redevelopments Authority Singapore.
Sengkang Newtown is situated in the north of Hougang Newtown and is in the north-eastern part of Singapore and is maintained by Urban Redevelopment Authority. Sengkang is bounded by Tampines Expressway in the north, Bungakok drive in the south, Suengi Serangoon in the east and by Jalan kayu in the west. Sengkang is divided into two parts Sengkang West and Sengkang East as it is cuts by Suengi Punggol River.
The word Sengkang means ‘prosperous harbor’ in Chinese and there was once fishing port located along the Suengi Serangoon. Before the town to be developed as a housing estate it was house for vegetable and pig farming.
Sengkang first ever first ever apartment blocks which are know termed as blocks in Singapore were completed in 1997 and they were at Riverale and by 2001 about 33,700 housing units were completed and people started to living in them. In Sengkang Newtown there were 384 HDB apartment blocks and the total numbers of flats in them were 39,982 units. Out of 39,982 units of HDB flats there were 16,017 four roomers, 19,477 five roomers and 4,488 executive flats. The numbers of units which have been projected for future purpose so as to boast Sengkang’s residents are about 95,000 and the number of peoples living in Sengkang is more than 138,500 peoples. Sengkang town development is governed by The Steering Committee which looks after the town development, transportation, education and social aspects.
Sengkang is the only first satellite town in which the major public transport amenities were developed in tandem with the housing estate, the main heavy rail tunnel and the elevated track infrastructure of the intra town Sengkang LRT were developed while the hosing blocks were under construction in the late 1990s.
While planning town center of Sengkang there was used an integrate plan of approach to housing, transport and commercial uses, once commuters alight from the Sengkang MRT station they have direct access to bus interchange Sengkang, shopping mall at compass point.
Sengkang is divided into seven sub zones and they are as follow:
• Sungei Serangoon East
• Jalan Kayu West
• Sengkang Town Centre
• Buangkok
• Trafalgar
• Jalan Kayu East
• Sungei Serangoon West.
Sengkang being one of the developed satellite town of Singapore it is served by number of transport facilities and they are Sengkang MRT, Buangkok MRT, Compassvale LRT, Fernvale LRT etc. and there are variety of bus service that circulates around Sengkang and they are Feeder Service, Trunk Service, SSB Transit and the SMRT.
