Serangoon is a district located in the central part of city state Singapore in its North-East region. Serangoon Newtown is the housing estate of Housing Development Board in Serangoon and is one of the smaller new towns of Singapore. Serangoon planning area is an urban planning zone and it comes under Urban Redevelopment Authority and encompasses entire area of Serangoon and the private housing estates which are at Serangoon gardens located between Ang Mo Kio and Hougang.
Tamil Muslims from India got settled here in Serangoon in the early 19th century, on the early maps of Singapore Serangoon was named as Seranggong. The name Serangoon was evolved by ‘Rangong bird’ which is a small marsh bird was found in the swamps of Serangoon. Basically it was Chinese settlement with some Malay and Indian inhabitants settled here. In the early years Serangoon had rubber plantation and fruit gardens.
Serangoon Newtown is bounded by Central express Road, Braddle way, Upper Paya Lebar Road, Bartley Road, Upper Serangoon road and Yio Chi Kang road. This Newtown is similar to The Bishan Newtown where the public housing estate is mixed with the pre-existing private housing estate. The total area of Serangoon Newtown is about 7.37 sq km and the area used for its residential purpose is about 1.56 sq km. the number of housing units of HDB are 21,482 and the ultimate projected units are 29,000. Serangoon has a population of about 75,600 residents.
Serangoon road and Upper Serangoon Road together form a radial arterial road of city-sate Singapore, which adjoins Serangoon, Hougang, Punggol and Sengkang. A section from Slegie road to Mac Pherson Road is called Serangoon road which is part of this arterial road.
After the redevelopment of the area Serangoon residents have access to number of amenities within their reach in the new town like school, gardens, community centers, retail outlets etc. Serangoon Crocodile Park which is located close to its housing estate is mostly visited place of Singapore by its residents and tourist.
Serangoon town center has wide range of amenities in it like retail outlets, HDB office and recently build community club popularly known as Braddell height, relational facilities are readily available at Serangoon stadium. A new civic plaza which is located in the heart of Serangoon Regional Center is under construction and once it gets completed it would provide wide range of sports and recreational facilities.
Serangoon is divided into four sub zones and they are:
• Seletar Hills
• Serangoon Central
• Serangoon Garden
• Serangoon North.
Serangoon is served by Serangoon MRT station and there are wide ranges of bus services which circulate trough Serangoon and they are Feeder Service, Trunk Service, SSB Transit, SMRT and Night Service.
