Social networks can be described as the grouping together of a group of likeminded individuals of different age groups into specific groups which is very popular online. This has led to the creation of various social networking sites the most common being facebook, twitter, friendster, Myspace among others.
People in this sites form new friends, meet old ones, exchange information, develop professional alliances, share life experiences and so much more. The best thing about social network sites is that it opens up a whole new world of diversity so that a person in the United States can communicate with another in India. This allows you to experience different cultures and learn new things about the world.
It is interesting to note that friendster has managed to outdo facebook when it comes to the number of users across all age groups and user engagement in Singapore. Friendster which is the seventh largest website in the world in terms of traffic generated and the number one social network site in Asia has been voted the number one social site in Singapore and is almost twice the size of any other social network site in the country.
It is two times bigger than facebook and recorded over 907,0000 visitors. It is 7.5 times bigger than Myspace in the country according to some research that was done recently. It has received more visitors than any other social site in every age group from 15-54 years.
Beyond leadership in the number of unique visitors, it also leads when it comes to user engagement which is the number of average minutes spent per visitor every month. It recorded an average of 146 minutes while (4 minutes were spent on facebook and 44 minutes on MySpace which made Friendster the most socially engaging of the three networks.
Singaporeans are clearly captivated by friendster and as three quarters of internet users visit the site each month and many of them are mostly young adults from 16 years and upwards all the way to professionals in their 20s, 30s and 40s the numbers are even higher as the research did not count the traffic from those who used internet cafes, or mobile devices which is a common way to access the internet in Singapore and Asia.
The research also revealed that friendster experienced relatively low overlap with other social networks in Singapore meaning that users of friendster generally did not visit other social networking sites. This was very different when compared to the other social sites where it was discovered that over half of them visited Friendster.
With those kinds of numbers many advertising executives, companies and marketers have rushed to exploit that huge market. This has seen artists, celebrities and companies building fan bases for promotional services using fan profiles and applications and new features being included to tap into the huge Friendster base through the Friendster developer program. Being the first social network in Asia with over 55 million monthly users, it has a large market that is simply waiting to be tapped.
