Toa Payoh is a district located in the central region of Singapore, it is commonly known as Housing Development Board (HDB0 housing estate and is known as Toa Payoh Newtown. It was the second earliest new town to be developed by HDB. The Toa Payoh is an urban planning zone which comes under Urban Redevelopment Authority Singapore, which encompasses Toa Payoh Newtown, Potong Pasir and a private housing estate in the upper Aljunied area.
Toa Payoh means ‘big swamp’ in Hokkien language, this word refers that Toa Payoh was a big swamp forest before the evolvement of Chinese market and gardens in this area. Toa Payoh was once district for notorious squatters their main livelihood was farming and rearing pigs. These squatters started to move out of Toa Payoh in 1962 as the government gave handsome compensation rates to their lands.
The total area of Toa Payoh Newtown is about 8 sq km in which the area used for its residential purpose is about 2.10 sq km. most of the housings here in Toa Payoh are of HDB there are 35,119 units of HDB flats and the projected ultimate number of flats are 48,000. The estimated population of the town is nearly 116,800 peoples; it is one of the densely populated towns of Singapore. It is the second satellite town of HDB’s it comes next to Queenstown.
The headquarters of HDB was shifted to Toa Payoh after the competition of HDB Hub in Toa Payoh, this HDB Hub has two wings, an atrium, leisure, learning center, four commercial building blocks and a three storey parking lot in the basement. This building also accommodates Singapore’s first ever air-conditioned bus interchange the Toa Payoh Bus Interchange. The Toa Payoh town center is popular for its busy atmosphere as it has many shopping malls and big department stores.
