Bishan is located in the central region of Singapore and is a public housing estate bounded by Ang Mo Kio, Braddle Road and central express highway and all along the west of the private housing of Upper Thompson Road to Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1.
Bishan Newtown as previously known as Kampong San Theng, it is quite rural area with dense wild plants, this area also has old cemetery which is called as Pi Shang Tig which means “Pavilion on the greens” and the name is very much responsible for the development of Bishan Newtown as it has many colorful roofs, link ways and distinctive precinct entrances. There were initial fears that HDB flats in Bishan would have poor occupancy as it is built above a cemetery, but being centrally situated Bishan has become a prime location for the residence thereby misplacing the fear.
Geographically Bishan New Town is situated in the central region of Singapore it is nested with Ang Mo Kio New town and Tao Paho New town and is closely situated to Macritchie reservoir. The main mode of transport of Bishan public is Central Expressway and Bishan MRT station. Bishan New town is spread in the area of three by three kilometers; the houses here in Bishan are of middle and upper class type. Flats in Bishan are bit expensive and this is because of the fact that it is located centrally in Singapore and easy access to any corner of the state.
Bishan has the mixture of three, four and five roomed HDB flats, but the majority of flats are four roomed and few of them are three and five roomed flats. Here the flats starting with the block number 1 are smaller but are more connected to town center, the block with number 25 is largest flats in the whole estate with an area about 1650 sq ft to 1700 sq ft and is known to be the largest of the HDB flats in Singapore.
Being centrally located Bishan has excellent transport service the major mode of transport for the public here is the bus service and the MRT service, the primary bus services originate from Bishan bus interchange to other towns.
The train service which is available at Bishan MRT station is located at North-South direction and connects the town with city in not less than 20 minutes.
For everyday shopping Bishan residents have Bishan north shopping mall, shopping and entertainment centers located at the center of town and the old shop houses which are lined on the side of Thompson road and Bishan junction.
At present, Bishan has four primary schools, seven secondary schools ad a junior college, there is also a post-technical secondary education institution.
The Ministry of Education Language Center (MOELC) is located in Bishan.
