Kallang is a subdivision and an urban planning area located in the southeastern part of Singapore. It is well known for its Singapore Indoor Stadium, Old National Stadium and the new Singapore sporting Hub. Singapore’s first ever airport was opened here in 1937 and shifted thereafter to another location due to increased air traffic demand, the airport terminal now is being occupied by People’s Association’s Headquarters.
Kallang according to Malay is the reference to ‘orang laut’ (sea gypsies), who lived in the side of Kallang river and Singapore river. The other meanings for Kallang in Malay is that the word Keylang means ‘mill or factory’ there were mills and factories here.
Kallang is often called as Kallang basin as it is drained by Kallang, Geylang, Rocher and Whompa rivers and by canal Pelton.
The housing estate of Kallang is built by Housing Development Board and were built in 1970 to 1980, some of the blocks of HDB are been reconstructed under the Selective En bloc Redevelopment Scheme (SERS) which is done to redevelop the area. The new blocks built in this scheme are about 30-storeys high which are the major skyscraper of the town and HDB is planning to build more this type of block here. The low rise blocks in the area of old airport were demolished by HDB to redevelop them. There are two small Housing Board (HDB) estates with 20 blocks in each of them and these both estates overlook the Kallang basin.
Kallang is also home for small industries like pipe making, garments industry etc. many of the large scale industries have been relocated from Kallang so as to improve it for residential purpose.
Kallang has a good sporting background it is well known for its Singapore National Stadium it is one of the most oldest stadium of Singapore know it has been demolished and replaced by Singapore Sports Hub which will be ready by 2011. The other famous sporting center of Singapore is the Kallang Cricket Ground which has been host for several One Day internationals.
Kallang has Singapore’s biggest ice-skating rink which is popularly known as Kallang Ice World, it is in the area of 975.5 sq m.

• Kampong Java
• Boon Keng
• Geylang Bahru
• Bugis
• Kallang Bahru
• Tanjong Rhu.
The Kallang River is the hub for various water sports, and Kallang town ahs world class amenities in it which overcome every need of its residents. The newly reopened Leisure Park provides huge variety of entertainment under one roof.
Kallang is served by Kallang MRT and the Boon Keng MRT station. The prominent bus services in Kallang are Trunk Service, SBS Transit, SMRT, Night Service and Other services.
