Pasir Panjang is an area in the South-Western Singapore which is located at the southern part of Queenstown planning area; it is an urban planning zone under Urban Redevelopment Authority Singapore. The area is facilitated with port and is quiet and sleepy as most of its commercial activities take place in the port. Pasir Panjang is also home for National University of Singapore (NUS).
Pasir Panjang in Malay is termed as ‘long sand’. A major road Pasir Panjang road run through the city and was built in and was opened by John Turnbull Thomson governor of Singapore at that time. During the early day at the time of colonial rule Pasir Panjang was a fishing village and had opium factories. Pasir Panjang is popularly known in the history of Singapore because it had witnessed fierce battles such as ‘Battle of Pasir Panjang’ which was fought between Japanese and British Empire.
Pasir Panjang has lots of private housing in it when compared to HDB housing estates. Private housing includes executive condominiums to landed property. The condominiums of Pasir Panjang are of low rise and old which are home for expatriates which work in the nearby offices and institutes and these condominiums named as The Village, Vista Park Condominium and The Longhouse. There are also new high-rise condominiums which are by the sea side and face the island of Sentosa and these are named as The Caribbean condominiums.
HDB estates are found in the outskirts of Pasir Panjang and they are named as Bukit Permai, Alexandra Road and Clementi.
Pasir Panjang is mostly involved in port business as it is one of the major port cities of Singapore, there are many car marts in Pasir Panjang which sell brand new cars and some of the marts sell second hand cars also.
There are two major shopping centers in Pasir Panjang and they are Harbor front Center and the Vivo City.
Harbor Front Center is also known as old World Trade Center is a complex with many offices and a ferry terminal. It has number of retail outlets and restaurants. From the ferry terminal one can Batam and some of the Indonesian islands.
Vivo city is largest shopping center in Singapore and is under service since 2006 besides from retail outlets and variety restaurant it has an amphitheatre and a wedding pool. It is also famous because it has Singapore’s largest Cineplex which has 15 screens under one roof.
Some of the landmarks of Pasir Panjang which are tourist’s attraction are Labrador Park, Reflections At Bukit Chandu, Kent Ridge Park and Haw Par Villa.
There are many bus services which circulate through Pasir Panjang and that are Trunk Service, Feeder Service, SSB Transit and SMRT Service.
