Yishun was formerly known as Nee Soon is a suburban town in northern part of Singapore encompassing the Yishun planning Area in the northern region which includes Yishun Newtown and Nee Soon private residential estate. It is bounded by Suengi Simpang Kiri in the north, Ang Mo Kio Newtown in the south, Seletar in the east and Mandai to the West.
Yishun is a Mandarin version of Nee Soon named after the famous ‘pineapple king’ and ‘rubber magnet’ Lim Nee Soon. Pepper and pineapple plantations were abundant here in the early days.
The total area in which Yishun is spread is about 8.10 sq km and the area used for residential purpose is about 4.45 sq km of its area. There are 46,613 housing units of HDB and the projected ultimate are 84,000 units. Development of Yishun started with the beginning of Nee Soon estate and the project was named as Yishun Newtown project which was begun in 1976. In the beginning 907 ha of land was allocated for residential and industrialization under this project but later this was increased to 919 ha land. The roads passing through Yishun Newtown are Yishun Avenue 1, Sembwang road and Admiralty road.
Yishun Newtown has all the necessary amenities within reach to their residents within their reach it has amenities like entertainment, commercial and recreational facilities, several sporting complexes and swimming clubs.
The Northpoint Shopping Center in Yishun is the prominent shopping destination for the residents of Yishun; it is locate near its MRT station and is undergoing expansion. This mall was opened in the year 1992 and it marks as the first modern suburban mall in the new towns of city-sate Singapore. Adjacent to the Northpoint Shopping Center there is a Yishun 10 Cineplex which is not only renowned in Singapore but also throughout Asia as it was the first of its kind to have 10 cine screens under one roof and it is operated by Golden Village Group. The only library in the Yishun area is the Yishun community library which has been shifted recently to Northpoint Shopping Center is serving the residents of Yishun and fulfills the needs of both adult and children readers.
There are two country clubs in Yishun and they are SAFRA Yishun Country Club and Orchid Country Club.
Yishun is divided into nine sub zones and they are:
• Yishun Central
• Yishun West
• Yishun East
• Yishun South
• Lower Seletar Reservoir
• Northland
• Nee Soon
• Khatib
• Springleaf.
Yishun is served by Yishun MRT and Khatib MRT stations and there are number of bus services which circulates trough Yishun they are Feeder Service, Trunk Service, SSB Transit and Other Bus Service.
