Potong Pasir is an area located between Tao Payoh and Senette estate and is located in the central region of Singapore. For urban planning purpose it is classified under Tao Payoh area. Potong Pasir is well known for its longest-held opposition in Singapore where there is dominance of one party in the entire state. Other party is in opposition since 1984.
From 1910 to 1937 this area was dominant in sand quarries; this is the main reason for its name. The name Potong Pasir means ‘cut sand’ in Malay. Due to these mining areas there created four pond s linked to Kallang River, though there are only two ponds left at present it is due to massive flooding in 1968, in the early days these ponds use to provide good livelihood to the residents living in Potong Pasir. In the early 1950s Potong Pasir used to be a good vegetable growing area, cultivation here used to be the prime livelihood of residents since 1830s.
Rapid changes came in the Potong Pasir since last five decades, there were massive constructions buildings and bridges across the ponds were built.
The public housing estate started in 1980s under Housing Development Board (HDB) governance and the first blocks got completed within two years of the commencement of construction. The slopping roofs of some of the blocks became recognizable icon of Potong Pasir.
Potong Pasir is very famous in the political history of Singapore as it is served by an opposition leader since five decades and it is also great because in Singapore where there is one party dominant, Potong Pasir has been in opposition since years here.
Potong Pasir is managed by Singapore’s longest serving opposition MP Chiam See Tong and his party name is Singapore Democratic Alliance which has total four opposition parties in it.
