Tampines Newtown is considered to be one of the largest residential areas of Singapore situated in its eastern region. It is bounded by Pan Expressway in the north, Bedok Canal in the south, Changi Airport in the east and by Tampines Avenue 10 in the west. Tampines is one of the three regional centers and the other two are Woodlands and Jurong East which comes under Urban Redevelopment Authority. The transformation of Tampines into first regional town of Singapore started way back in 1970s, since than Tampines had molded itself into institutional, social, recreational and commercial hub in the eastern region of Singapore. Most of the Singapore’s commercial agencies have their offices in this town. This is the reason for Tampines facilities being served by entire eastern region of Singapore as well as its residents. For administrative purpose it share boundary with Simei Newtown in the south Tampines Newtown.
Before the Newtown came into existence Tampines was a dense forest and had small kampongs in it. The name Tampines was derived from the Malay word which denotes a tree ‘Riau ironwood’ which was found abundantly in Tampines.
Like other new tows of Singapore Tampines are densely populated its population is over 216,000 and it is spread in an area of about 12 sq km in which the area used for residential purpose is about 5 sq km. There are more than 61,485 housing units of HDB flats at present in Tampines and the projected ultimate units are 83,000. In 1991 Tampines got prestigious award of United Nations World Habitat Award which was reorganization of its effort for outstanding human settlement and development. The Prefabricated technology was first used in Tampines for housing in Singapore which allowed making variation in design of apartment blocks built by HDB. Tampines is the best place to live in Singapore with its intelligent town’s features.
Tampines provide wide range of shopping and dining facilities; it has two main shopping centers they are Tampines Mall and The Century Square which provide number of facilities to the residents of Tampines within reach.
Tampines central complex which is located in the Tampines Street 83 was the first development, which has combination of both commercial center and town’s community club, through which the town’s residents can enjoy both shopping and entertainment at the same time.
Tampines is divided into five sub zones and they are:
• Tampines North
• Tampines Central
• Tampines West
• Tampines Changkat
• Tampines East.
Tampines is served by Tampines MRT station and there are number of bus service which circulates throughout Tampines and they are Feeder Service, Trunk Service, SSB Transit, SMRT and Night Service.
